RECLAIMING TRADITIONAL NIGERIAN VALUES: A REFLECTION ON WIDOWHOOD AND FAMILY SYSTEMS

Abstract

This study examines the ways through which traditional Nigerian values are reclaimed as an important avenue for the restoration of moral integrity, communal solidarity, and cultural identity in modern Nigerian society. The paper draws on historical, sociological, and anthropological perspectives to argue that these values include honesty; respect for elders; communal cooperation; dignity of labor; and collective responsibility-all of which sustained social harmony and mutual coexistence in pre-colonial Nigerian societies. Using the theoretical lens of Functionalism Theory and Feminist Theory, this study explores how traditional Nigerian values can be revitalised to sustain moral order and gender equity. The Functionalist perspective views culture as a system whose elements work together to maintain social harmony; hence, traditional institutions once promoted respect, honesty, and communal solidarity. However, modernisation and globalisation have weakened these functions, leading to social disorganisation. The Feminist Theory challenges patriarchal traditions that marginalise women, particularly in widowhood practices and inheritance rights. By merging both frameworks, the study advocates for reclaiming positive cultural values while reforming oppressive customs. The paper, therefore, promotes culturally embedded yet progressive practices in the pursuit of gender justice by arguing that coexistence of tradition with modernity can, indeed, sustain inclusiveness, resilience, and human dignity. The paper concludes that redefining widowhood practices within family systems not only restores the integrity of Nigerian cultural values but also contributes to broader discourses on gender equality, social justice, and sustainable cultural transformation in contemporary Nigerian society.
