This paper examines the paradox of sustainable development and poverty alleviation in Lagos, Nigeria, with a focus on coastal communities, including Makoko, Otodogbame, Ilasan, and Maroko. The ultimate goal of sustainable development is to meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations by balancing the economic, social, and environmental pillars. Despite infrastructure, investment, and policies in these communities, social inequality persists. The study adopts a qualitative approach, analysing policy documents, academic literature, and media reports to identify gaps between urban development and grassroots realities. It concludes that while Lagos has achieved progress in areas like transportation and smart city initiatives, vulnerable coastal communities are often sidelined. These communities face displacement, environmental degradation, and economic marginalization. The paper recommends community-centred and accurate government policies to achieve effective results.
