Abstract

This study investigates the challenges posed by media capture to journalistic accountability within Nigeria's media landscape, emphasizing the ethical dimensions of reporting corruption. Drawing on Media System Dependency and Gatekeeping Theories, the study explores how ownership patterns, regulatory pressures, and digital platform influences restrict media independence, often resulting in biased reporting that favors powerful elites. Through a quantitative design, data from 200 Nigerian media practitioners reveal the impact of educational background, professional training, and demographic factors on practitioners' familiarity with ethical codes and their perceived accountability. Results indicate that, although 85.3% of respondents report awareness of ethical standards, only a limited proportion apply these codes in practice, undermined by inadequate ethics training and external control over editorial decisions. Demographic factors such as age and education correlate significantly with accountability, highlighting regional disparities, particularly among younger and less-trained practitioners. Findings suggest that media capture diminishes public trust, erodes the media's gatekeeping function, and weakens democratic processes. Recommendations include enhancing ethics training, establishing independent oversight bodies, diversifying funding models, and creating targeted professional development for emerging media roles. This study provides a critical framework for understanding and addressing the ethical and structural challenges faced by Nigerian media in promoting accountability, reinforcing the media's vital role in sustaining democratic integrity.
