The Role of Nigerian Press Council in Combating Unethical Journalism

Abstract

Ethics in journalism is a subject of constant debate, with varied interpretations and perspectives. The Nigerian Press Council (NPC) is tasked with regulating ethical standards in the Nigerian press but the organization faces numerous challenges in enforcing compliance and addressing unethical practices. This paper examines the functions, powers, limitations, controversies, and challenges surrounding the NPC, using a qualitative research approach. Through semi-structured interviews with senior Directors of the NPC, thematic analysis reveals insight into the NPC's role in combating unethical journalism. While the NPC plays a crucial role in upholding ethical standards, challenges such as political interference, inadequate regulatory frameworks, and limited resources persist. Recommendations are provided to strengthen the regulatory framework, enhance capacity building and collaboration, leverage technology, and raise public awareness on media ethics. By addressing these challenges and implementing the proposed recommendations, Nigeria can foster a media environment that upholds professionalism, ethics, and accountability.
